Wow you want to be a pediatrician and you take illegal substances. Wow, great doctor we have here. I am sure you will be the greatest doctor in the world. Smoking and yet advocating against it to the kids you treat. I applaud your hypocrisy.
Let me lay this down for you.
1. Weed shouldn’t be illegal. It’s better for you than alcohol or cigarettes.
2. I am going to be the fucking greatest doctor in the world.
3. By the time I’m a pediatrician, weed will probably be legal for people older than 18. So, I won’t be advocating against it, I’ll just be saying, “Hey kid, I know it’s fun, but just wait a few years. And if you’re not going to, let me tell you what you can do to keep yourself happy, safe, and healthy.”
What I love about Boy Meets World is that it's so simple. It's just a group of teenagers growing up. They aren't wizards, vampires, psychics, or secret popstars. It's easy to relate to on every level. Every episode tackles another challenge that comes with growing up and ends up teaching you so much about life.
Ladies & Gentlemen, I give you, the 2012 Republican Presidential Candidates:
"Don’t misunderstand. I am not here bashing people who are homosexuals, who are lesbians, who are bisexual, who are transgender. We need to have profound compassion for people who are dealing with the very real issue of sexual dysfunction in their life and sexual identity disorders.” (2004)
"The rate of AIDS infection is on the increase again. From the gay point of view, the reasons seem quite sensible. First, these men don't really see a reason to live past their fifties. They are not married, they have no children, and their lives are centered on new sexual partners... because sex is the center of their lives, they want it to be as pleasurable as possible, which means unprotected sex. Third, they enjoy the attention & pity that comes with being sick." (1995 in a newsletter)
"I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm a Christian, but you don't need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there's something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can't openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school. " (2011 in a campaign ad)
"I should tell my story. I'm also unemployed." (2011 while speaking to unemployed people in Florida. Romney's net worth is over $200 million.)
"She's not young enough or pretty enough to be the wife of the President. And besides, she has cancer." (1994, about his first wife)
"Is anyone saying same-sex couples can’t love each other? I love my children. I love my friends, my brother. Heck, I even love my mother-in-law. Should we call these relationships marriage, too?" (2008)
"Carbon dioxide is portrayed as harmful. But there isn't even one study that can be produced that shows that carbon dioxide is a harmful gas." (2009 during a debate)
"PETA is not happy that my dog likes fresh air." (2006, when questioned about driving 12 hours with his dog in a cage strapped to the top of his car)
okay so i really want to try weed, but i've always been held back due to all the negative propaganda surrounding it. but, do you mind going into depth about its effects on the brain. i just want to be clear that it's not fucking up my health too much. (and you seem to have lots of knowledge on this topic)
Alright, since this is a topic that’s super important to me, I’m going to go into some detail. Here is a message from abovetheinfluence.com and my opinions.
You may hear people ask, “If it’s dangerous, why do so many people have medical marijuana cards?”40 It’s true that scientists have determined that the cannabis plant has the potential for addressing a range of medical conditions. But it’s also true that when you’re young and your body is still growing, marijuana actually has the potential of inflicting a long-lasting, negative impact on your developing brain.
Using marijuana at a young age can result in structural and functional deficits of the brain. This could cause you to develop weakened verbal and communication skills, lowered learning capabilities and a shortened attention span.40
Umm, bullshit. I went to the website they sited here and found nothing substantial. If you really want me to go in depth, let me know and I’ll give you my opinions on the website that they sited. It’s http://www.theantidrug.com/pdfs/resources/marijuana/Marijuana_Strategizer.pdf and I have a response to almost all of it.
In addition to the possible (POSSIBLE) effects on your brain, smoking marijuana may also be hazardous to your developing lungs. (Well duh, you’re inhaling smoke. If you are seriously concerned about this, use a vaporizer to smoke.) Marijuana smoke contains 50% to 70% more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke.41
Again, I went to the website the sited and found no facts even related to this. However, if you do some research (or you want me to do more) you could probably find some more information. But this has to do with cancers and such, not the brain.
You may have heard people argue that marijuana is a “gateway drug” to harder drug use. Some say this is a myth, others insist it is a fact. The truth is that there is a link. Research shows that the earlier you start using marijuana, the more likely you are to become dependent on it or other types of drugs later in life.42
This is a stretch. Using marijuana may lead to an addiction to marijuana just as much as eating a cheeseburger will lead to an addiction to cheeseburgers. Sure, cheeseburgers don’t make you feel as good as marijuana, but no conclusive study has ever deemed marijuana addictive - just the ones where it helps their case. I, as a typically healthy and smart girl, could stop right now if I had to. There are only specific situations where one can get addicted. As for the other types of drugs, ehh, I could see how that would be true. So, you gotta know yourself well enough to say no the ickier drugs and stick to weed.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Some movies and music make “stoner” culture seem cool, natural and like it’s not a big deal. But if being fit and getting good grades are some of your goals, using marijuana can become a big deal, fast. (Using myself as an example, I played lacrosse and got into Stanford…so…it only becomes a big deal if you let it - you gotta be smart about how often and how much you smoke.) Marijuana limits your brain’s effectiveness, slows your thinking and impairs your coordination. (Hahaha, duh.) A number of studies have also shown an association between chronic marijuana use and increased rates of anxiety, depression and schizophrenia. 41
Notice the word chronic. That means if you’re smoking all day errday. Which you won’t be, because that IS a bad idea.
Hit me with more questions about this if you want, I’m happy to answer!
i have major respect for you and your opinions!! you are so amazing!! what made you decide to do medical school? i always saw you more as a humanities type person
Thanks! I really appreciate that :)
Well, I wanted to be a pediatrician when I was younger, then in high school I decided I wanted something like International Relations or Public Policy (Humanities), then a few weeks before I got to Stanford I decided, “Hey. You like math. You’re going to Stanford. You should be an engineer.” So, that’s how I decided BioE and a few weeks ago I decided again that I wanted to be a pediatrician. YAY :)
but where are these scholarships? when you do find them on fastweb or what not, they're extremely hard to get...
They are everywhere! Honestly, just google college scholarships, look for local ones, use fastweb - anything you can. I swear it will be 100% worth it in the end if you get one. (Which I’m sure you will, because I’m sure you’re fabulous and intelligent.)
how are you paying for your stanford education, out of curiosity? are your parents paying? or did you receive scholarship, financial aid grants? or loans? any advice on how to pay for private college educations?
Some loans, Stanford has hella bank - so they help out a lot, and my parents.
MY ADVICE IS TO APPLY FOR ALL OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS. I got lazy and only applied to a few, and it’s one of the things I reallly regret.]So, DON’T BE LIKE ME AND GET LAZY. GO FILL OUT THOSE APPLICATIONS AND WRITE THOSE ESSAYS. RIGHT NOW.
Also, for your point on prostitution. I agree that some women are forced into it because they do not have money and need some sort of income, and it may be their own choice. But isn't money a sort of force, thus the sex is forced and not consensual? If the woman chooses to go into a whorehouse but she wouldn't if she had the choice, then the sex is she undergoing is forced -- by the money. If she had the option, which she doesn't, she would never perform those acts. Thus, it is rape and violence
Yes, I agree. Again, I’m not saying that I support the fact that women are forced into this situation, all I’m saying is I pass no judgement on the women who feel like there is no other way than selling sex.
Also, NO WOMAN can "sell sex" and stay emotionally/physically/psychology SANE throughout the whole ordeal. NO WOMAN. I don't know what kind of sick, demented world you live in -- I think the pot is messing with your judgement -- but prostitution is violent against women, gives a MAN POWER over her, and no woman can come out of it whole. She loses a part of her in the process and you have a right to your views, but please do some more research on this. Or take a women's study class.
Woah there sweetie, calm yourself down. I’m not saying it’s possible. In fact, I definitely agree with you - I don’t think any woman could handle prostitution and remain happy. HOWEVER, if there was a woman who could, and it was her sane decision to go into prostitution, then I think that’s fine. And do not tell me I live in a sick, demented world just because you don’t understand it. My views actually aren’t that different from yours, mine are just more abstract/conceptual. If you’ll notice, my number 1 point was that women being forced into prostitution is awful. In our society, I completely agree that prostitution is violence against women, gives man power over her, and that she will be damaged in the process. And don’t make it seem like I support that, because I don’t in any way. We’re on the same side here.
Waiiiittttt how would a friends with benefits thing work? Are you just not an emotional person? What I mean, is, is it really for you to emotionally not get attached to a person...
I think you forgot a word in your sentence…
Anyway! I am definitely an emotional person. Not overly emotional, just solidly. However, I know myself well enough to know that I can separate those emotions from sexual actions. I can determine the degree of emotional attachment as I see fit for the situation. It’s not something a lot of people can do and most people have trouble understanding it. (Like you, but I really respect you being open enough to try and figure it out.)
1) Women being forced into prostitution by other people and by society is awful. Just plain awful.
2) If a grown woman decides that she wants to sell sex and stays mentally/physically/emotionally stable and happy throughout, then I see nothing wrong with it. (This is just a more extreme version of my views on if a woman wants to be a stripper. If it’s her decision and she’s happy doing it, then it’s awesome.) However, if she’s feeling demeaned or disrespected doing it, then it is not okay.
But, as awful as it is, I don’t pass any kind of judgement on the women who have no where else to turn but to selling sex. If that’s what a woman has to do to keep herself or her family surviving, then more power to her.
I decided that the hippie lifestyle was the lifestyle for me in about 7th grade. I found that I believed in everything hippies are viewed as believing in - non violence, loving the earth, singing songs in the forest and generally loving everyone, etc. From there, I did a lot of research on weed, decided that society had it all wrong, tried it for the first time during sophomore year and to this day I have not had a bad experience with it.
But isn't having sex with random people a total shame of one's body and damaging to one's emotions?
(Are you the same anon that has a problem with drugs?)
The way I see sex, no, having sex with random people is not a total shame of one’s body and damaging to one’s emotions. However, let me be more clear than I was before, this applies only to ME. It could apply to others who agree with me, but I am in no way saying that everyone should be totally fine with sexing up random strangers. It is MOST DEFINITELY not for everyone. It’s very specific to every person. So for me, it’s not shameful or damaging because going into it, I know exactly what I’m doing - fulfilling primal desires. I’m not going into thinking, “Hey, I’m going to share my body and love and feelings with this stranger. What a great idea.” No. That kind of mindset is the one you have when you’re about to have sex with the person you love.
So, I believe that if you are comfortable enough with sex, and know that you can go in with the right mindset, sex with random people is not shameful.
HOWEVER, ALWAYS USE PROTECTION. AND ALWAYS KNOW THAT SOMETHING COULD GO WRONG. ALWAYS.
Definitely. But only with a very certain type of person. Someone who is as confident, open, and communicative as I am. Also, he/she would have to be the kind of friend that I don’t spend all my time with.
So, I believe in waiting to lose your virginity until you love someone. Because your virginity is something special and sacred and only someone you really care about deserves it. However, when it comes to just sex, I fully believe it’s possible to do it without that beautiful connection. You can want to do it purely for the reason that it feels awesome. (This is normally what happens when you get drunk.) I don’t think having sex for this reason is slutty or disgraceful, I look at it more as just two (or more, if that’s your thing) people looking to fill some natural, primal desires. Now, that being said, not everyone can do this. Some people can’t detach sex from love, and for those people, random hookups are a poor, poor decision.
Let me know if you want any more on this subject! Or any other subjects! You, my anon friend, are keeping me so occupied and not bored and I love it!
